It's early and the
temperature is in the 40's. Brrrrrrrrrr..... I wish I had something
warm to throw around me. This is where the Easy to make Quilt comes in.
I think that quilting is truly a talent but
this is so easy that even someone who is clueless about sewing, like
myself, can do it.
Now you don't have to know how to use a
sewing machine cause I have done it all by hand also. So here it
goes...
First go shopping for some really cute or
fun twin sheets. Thread count is not important, but the higher the
count the harder to do it by hand. However you will properly want to
use a sewing machine.
As I was saying ... You will need two twine
sheets of the same size. Colors can be matching or you can go a little
wild. I have used solid on one side and stripe or flower on the other.
Or your could go flower on one side and stripes on the other. Go wildn
and use your imagination...
Take the two right sides of the sheets and
place them together. If you notice the sheets match almost perfectly if
the are the same brand.
Now sew a 1/2" to 1" hem starting from the
top all the way around sewing three sides of the sheets. Now when
finished take your batting and and place it on the wrong side of the
sheets. Slip stitch the batting to the sheets using the hem as your
guide. I would stitch the batting to just one layer of the hem cause
its kinda hard to stitch through both.
When your finished cut the remaining batting
away so you have the batting the same size as the sheets. Now this is
the simple part, take the sheets and turn them right side out. Be sure
to reach in between the sheets and push out the corners, you may have
to cut away some of the sheets to allow the corners to form.
Lay out the sheets on floor or table or bed.
I do it on my bed it easier for me...Then sew a slip stitch around the
the edges of the sheet about 1" to keep the side from moving while you
quilt. It may be a little to get the needle through the fabric so the
size of needle may be important at this time.
Large needles are easier to handle and get
through the fabric , and I found that if you stick them in to wax they
go through better. So that's why I have so many candles around with
holes in them... hmmmm... On the end of the sheet (wait its now looking
more like a quilt) on the end of the quilt that we left open when we
turned it inside out will now be stitched up. You can do this by hand
or sewing machine which ever you suits your style. I like the sewing
machine.
Turn it under so you have about an 1" and
stitch all the way across the fabric to the other end and be sure to
secure the sides so it wont come open. You will need a large eye needle
to do the quilting. You can find them in any crafts or super center in
sewing department.
Select a color of ribbon that will
compliment or that will be completely crazy and from one side of the
quilt to the other you will start to insert the needle into fabric all
the way and pull the ribbon through. Pull the ribbon till you get close
to the end of it, you can decide to tie a knot or a bow what ever you
like. Do this all over the quilt.
You can be uniform in your design or be
completely out there and do what ever you want. When finished with the
quilting remove the stitching around the edges and go to the kitchen
get a cup of hot chocolate, go to the TV room and wrap the quilt around
yourself sit down on the couch, floor or what ever and sip on the hot
chocolate and be proud of you new creation.
Materials needed - Two twin sheets, thread
to match, thin ribbon, large eye needles, 1/4" to 1/2" batting (I find
1/2" is better but you decide for yourself), sewing machine (cuts time
in half or more than by hand). Have fun and Happy Quilting.
